There’s one thing that’s been on everyone’s lips this summer, from Hollywood royalty to Nashville country music darlings and NYC runway ‘it’ girls––and no, it’s not a juicy rumor. It’s summer’s hottest beauty trend: coral lipstick.
The peachy-pink hue is bold, yet classic––trendsetters and timeless style icons alike have been spotted in the shade It’s daring and eye catching, but because it’s also universally flattering, there’s no risk involved.
And as luck would have it, one of our all-time favorite brands, Lipstick Queen, just released their take on this chic shade. With a semi-sheer, moisturizing formula designed to pair perfectly with animal print, Jungle Queen is our favorite new way to get in touch with your wild side.
You can get a sneak peek here. Or, if you need some inspiration, check out our take on fierce, fun, animal-inspired style.
When it comes to trends, no one is further ahead of the curve than celebs, and you have to hand it to them, they’re pretty good at picking out the things that make them look good. Whether you consider yourself a style maven or a more classic dresser, there’s usually something of-the-moment worth coveting in Hollywood’s collective closet. So, to make it easier for you to snag this season’s must haves, we pulled together a list of what all the models, it girls, and actresses are going crazy for.
Have you ever dreamed of lounging poolside decked out a crisp white bikini, floppy sun hat, and all your best jewelry?
It might sound silly, but why not? If diamonds really are a girl’s best friend, then why do we limit ourselves so much on when we can wear them? Glamour is all about mixing high and low, and making the mundane feel luxurious. Not that there’s anything boring about a beautiful hot day in the middle of summer when you have nothing to do but kick back and relax.
We love the West Coast (in spite of San Francisco’s chilly summers) but when it comes to making the most of the season (and dressing to the nines), we think our East Coast counterparts are onto something. And there’s nothing that sums up easy, effortless, laid-back luxury better than summer in the Hamptons. After all, how many places are there where ‘summering’ is a verb?
We just launched a necklace, a nautical-inspired tee, and a pair of earrings that perfectly embody this vibe, but we didn’t want to stop there. With summer’s last hurrah fast approaching, we’re running out of time to celebrate all things cool, casual, and carefree, but it’s not too late to make up for lost time.
You can shop the video here to get a little East Coast style inspiration––or, keep scrolling for photos that will make you feel like you were really there, even if you spent all of June and July cooped up in the city.
Happy Wednesday! After the long 4th of July weekend, you’re probably just getting back into things, catching up, and easing into a five day week again. The week can feel endless, but don’t despair––you’re halfway there. (Okay, so maybe you’ve been back for a full week and a half already, but summer Fridays are so sweet, sometimes it can take a little while to get over them.)
To help you get through the hump day doldrums, we thought you might need a little pick-me-up. And what could be better than cupcakes?
…Unless you don’t have much of a sweet tooth––then you might prefer to treat yourself by getting pampered with a mani pedi.
Choices, choices. But who says you have to pick just one? So, to put a little spring in your step (and inspire you to get creative this weekend) here you are: cupcakes, AND manicures. Matching ones. Adorable? Yes. Indulgent? Absolutely. Delicious? Well, at least the cupcakes should be. Enjoy!
(Don’t have such steady hands but want to do your own nails? Try the Julep Plie––this handy little tool is ergonomically shaped to give you more precision and control when painting your nails, especially with your non-dominant hand.)
Best kept beauty secret: Grande Lash MD —- my normally short, thin lashes are long and thick now! I shared the secret with my mom who has indistinguishable lashes, and hers are lush and amazing now, too! Shhh!
Favorite lipstick shade: I love to mix it up, but some of my everyday favorites are: Lipstick Queen Chinatown Lip Pencil in Scarlet Red; Givenchy Rouge Interdit Satin Lipstick in Beige Champagne; Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Berry; Stila Lip Glaze in Kitten; Kimiko Sheer Tint and Lip Plumper in Sweet Plum
Hair for every day: Either 1) blown out sleek and straight; 2) a low ponytail; 3) a high top knot bun (with the Sarah Potempa wrap up)
Favorite low-maintenance hair trick: On mornings when I’m too lazy to give myself a blowout, I default to a super easy side-parted low pony. I spiff it up with a cute enamel pony cuff —- black is so classic and goes with everything! :-)
Must have tool that simplifies your routine: Japonesque Lash Curler —- okay, this doesn’t “simplify” my routine, but I love long, curled lashes —- they totally open my eyes and make me look more awake.
Time saver: The T3 hair dryer —- it’s expensive, but it totally saves time in the morning. Can you really put a price on 5 extra minutes of sleep?
Favorite fragrance: Depends on my mood, but I love Chanel Mademoiselle; Caudalie The Des Vignes; Pinrose Merry Maker
Ingredient you’re obsessed with:Retinol; Vitamin C
What’s your favorite thing about yourself? The older I get, the more comfortable I am in my own skin. I’m learning what it means to really love myself —- which means being thankful for all the things that make me…me.
Trend you want to try: I’m not super “trendy” when it comes to makeup, but I’m always inspired by a beautiful, sophisticated bronze/gold lid.
What upcoming beauty innovation are you excited for (or wish existed)?: I’m intrigued by Tria Beauty’s Age-Defying Laser —- if I can get dermatologist-like results at home, I’m sold :-)
The Final Four: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, and the Netherlands
The United States may have been knocked out in the round of 16, but that doesn’t mean the World Cup has to be over for you. When you can’t go off of patriotism alone to pick your team (we hope you all had a great 4th!) it could come down to anything––the city you most enjoyed visiting, the country with the best food, or even the hottest player. So, to make it easier for you (and to help bring out your competitive spirit and you get invested again in time for the semis) we put together a quick, handy guide to choosing your new World Cup favorite. With four teams remaining, it’s down to…
Official Language: Portuguese
Food: Churrasco, or Brazilian barbecue. Visit a Brazilian churrascaria stateside to sample a variety of meats cooked over charcoal on skewers. Rather than giving you a menu to order from, waiters walk through the restaurant with skewers and slice portions of what you’d like to sample directly onto your plate.
Drink: The Caipirinha. A close relative of the mojito, this light, refreshing cocktail is made with Brazilian cachaça, sugar, and lime. It’s Brazil’s national cocktail, and it’s the perfect complement to a day lounging in the tropics (or poolside at home).
City to Visit: Rio de Janeiro. Climb hundreds of steps to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer, or head to one of the city’s gorgeous beaches, like Copacabana or Ipanema, for a more low key afternoon.
You might be too late to catch the World Cup, but you can always head down to Rio to catch carnival or the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Style Inspiration: Brazil is known for it’s bikinis, but you don’t have to bare it all to get the look. Brights and beachwear are the perfect way to infuse your wardrobe with a little South American flair.
Star Player: With Neymar out, Brazil will have to rely much more heavily on their back line. Defender David Luiz will be a player to watch in the two upcoming matches. He scored a goal in Brazil’s last game against Colombia, and took a moment after the game to console opposing player and World Cup leading scorer James Rodriguez (which we think is just as commendable).
Eye Candy: He’ll be watching the next two games from the bench, but Neymar has won the most hearts both at home and internationally.
Strengths: In Brazil, fútbol is more than just a game, it’s a religion. As the host country, their fan base will dominate the crowd, giving them the home field advantage. They have a lot of really talented players, including some of the best defensive players in the world, so it will be hard for opposing teams to break through to score.
Weaknesses: They’ve lost Neymar to a broken vertebra, and Thiago Silva was suspended from the game for a yellow card in the quarterfinals. With two key players missing, Brazil has gone from clear favorite to the underdog.
Next Match: Tuesday, July 8th, at 1pm Pacific Time, versus Germany.
Official Language: Spanish
Food: Empanadas. The snackable, savory street food consists of a mini pie crust folded in half, typically stuffed with chicken, beef, or cheese, with cumin, olive, grilled onion, and egg to add flavor.
Drink: The once underrated French grape Malbec has blown up into Argentina’s chief wine varietal. The full bodied wine is characterized by jammy notes of plum and blackberry with earthy, tannic undertones.
City to Visit: Buenos Aires. Catch a tango show, take in an art museum, and snap a photo in front of the colorful houses in La Boca in Argentina’s capital.
Style Inspiration: Take a page out of the players’ book and pair blue and white for a laid back, effortless look. Argentinian style is relaxed, natural, casual, and a little bit boho, yet always pulled together––just one more reason Buenos Aires is known as ‘the Paris of South America’.
Star Player: Recognized as one of the best players in the world (and of all time) Lionel Messi is the backbone of the Argentine team.
Eye Candy: Check out Sergio Aguero and Mariano Andujar if the ref stops the game for an injury or a free kick.
Strengths: As a top scorer, Messi draws defenders to him, leaving his teammates open for a pass with clear shot on goal. And with 4 of the team’s 8 World Cup goals, he’s as good at scoring as he is at setting up plays.
Weaknesses: The team has a big height disadvantage, and they aren’t as fast as some of the other teams. They’re stronger when they have possession of the ball, so defense could be their achilles heel.
Next Match: Wednesday, July 9th, at 1pm Pacific Time, versus Netherlands.
Official Language: German
Food: Sausage is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of German food, but we’ve found that pretzels are a much better sports-watching snack. They’re light, easy to eat with your hands, and they pair perfectly with beer––plus they’re as delicious on their own as they are dipped in mustard.
Drink: Beer. Unsurprisingly, it’s the number one selling alcoholic beverage in Germany, and Oktoberfest is to Germany as Mardi Gras is to New Orleans. Plus, your average German beer is light years better than your standard bottom shelf American brew.
City to Visit: Berlin. Since the wall came down, culture has grown by leaps and bounds in this cool, cosmopolitan city, and it’s now one of Europe’s biggest artistic hubs. There are art installations from top names scattered around the city like easter eggs (and many are in public spaces, so you don’t even have to pay to see them) so you can make a day of tracking them down before taking in a little world history at the wall. It’s also known for its nightlife, and is regularly touted as the home of some of the best clubs in the world.
Style Inspiration: Think edgy, sophisticated, minimalist, and modern. Berlin’s fashion is unique, unpretentious, and suited to a fast paced urban lifestyle. The colder climate makes layering a necessity, so women dress to stand out without showing tons of skin.
Star Player: Striker Miroslav Klose is just one goal away from tying the record for the player with the most goals scored in World Cup tournaments over their entire career. (The record is 15).
Eye Candy: Mats Hummels is one of the few players who manages to look as good with facial hair as without it.
Strengths: Germany has held on to a lot of the same players for a while, so they know each other well, and they know how to play as a team, so they play like a well-oiled machine. Rather than having one star striker, they have a few, so there’s less chance that an injury or a red card could hurt their chances, and they’ll be harder for other teams to cover.
Weaknesses: With a team of veteran players, they’ll likely tire out before their opponents. A tie that leads to extra time could give other teams a scoring advantage.
Next Match: Tuesday, July 8th, at 1pm Pacific Time, versus Brazil.
Food: The US isn’t the only country that can count fries among its most characteristic foods. The Dutch are known for a snack called patat, or thick-cut fries, which are then doused in mayonnaise and served in a cone.
Drink: Genever is a blend of distilled spirits and juniper berries that’s very similar to gin. It’s often enjoyed in shot form with beer to follow, but if that’s not your style, you can mix it into a cocktail.
City to Visit: Amsterdam. It may be known for its loose laws, but there’s a lot more to this city than vice. It’s a very free, open city, and that’s reflected in their culture as well as what typically draws tourists. Check out the local coffee houses and bars, or for a more low key day, explore the city by bike––the locals’ favored form of transportation. Then you can get your daily dose of culture with a visit to the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum.
Style Inspiration: As the number one most bike-friendly city in the world, Amsterdam has gained a reputation for being sporty and chic––so cool, casual, athletic-inspired style is the way to go. We love clothes you can live in that also make you look fantastic, and day-to-day Dutch style is the perfect source of inspiration. Design your look from the bottom up with wedges, boots, or statement sneakers.
Star Player: With speed, footwork, and a killer left foot on his side, Arjen Robben has been crucial to the Netherlands’ success up to this point.
Eye Candy: We’ll have one eye on Robin van Persie and one on Daryl Janmaat for the upcoming semifinal.
Strengths: They have both speed and height going for them. They can outrun most opposing teams’ defenders, so they’ll be able to get into position for some dangerous crosses into the box, and headers are usually won by the tallest players.
Weaknesses: Their biggest challenge so far has been keeping possession on their side of the field; they rely on long balls to make key plays, so against a team with strong defense, they’ll be more likely to make mistakes.
Next Match: Wednesday, July 9th, at 1pm Pacific Time, versus Argentina.
Baby You're a Firework: A Celebration of All Things Red White & Blue for July 4th
July 4th is just around the corner, and we’re excited about it for more reasons than we can count.
For starters, we can’t wait to try out some of these DIY projects:
Not to mention, this year it falls on a Friday, which sets you up perfectly for a long weekend. If you live in the city, it’s the perfect excuse to get out of town and go somewhere you can celebrate with the third thing we’re looking forward to––fireworks. Add to that the gorgeous July weather and you’ve got a recipe for perfection.
But if your weekend plans are more ‘staycation’ than vacation, don’t stress. It’s America’s birthday, and we’re planning to fête it like we would our own, no matter where we end up: with good food, good company, a fabulous outfit, and just a touch of nostalgia.
Keep reading for inspiration on how to have the perfect fun, festive weekend whether you’re in the city, the suburbs, or a secluded spot somewhere out of town.
Make a Statement: The Fourth is the perfect excuse to make waves with a bold, gorgeous red lipstick. Everything else, from your shoes to your bag and your dress, is just an accessory.
Wax Nostalgic For: New York in the 70s. Think Andy Warhol, Pop Art, and the Factory, and look to Edie Sedgewick for style inspiration. Or, if you’d rather go further back in time, think prohibition, fringed flapper dresses, and the roaring 20s––both have a cool, urban-American vibe.
Celebrate in Style: As disappointing as it might be that you have to skip the fireworks, it’s perfectly fine to play with sparklers in the street, or even on the balcony of your apartment. Pop a bottle of champagne to make things twice as festive.
Make a Statement: You can’t go wrong with a little white summer dress. Whether it’s day or night, indoors or outdoors, you’ll turn heads without feeling too decked out.
Wax Nostalgic For: 60s San Francisco. If you have any Grateful Dead or Jefferson Airplane records lying around, now’s the time to break them out. Modern boho style took its cues from the hippie movement, so you can subtly reference this point in history with a flowy vintage skirt or dress and a flower in your hair.
Celebrate in Style: Throw some burgers on the barbecue and whip up some homemade firecracker popsicles––not only are they perfectly in theme, they’re made with real fruit, so they’re a lot healthier than the ones you would buy at the store.
Make a Statement: It’s probably too hot for blue jeans, but an afternoon in the wilderness by the lake is the perfect setting to whip out your old denim cutoffs. Layer with a bikini or a basic white tee.
Wax Nostalgic For: The Wild West. We wouldn’t suggest going full cowboy, but denim, campfires, and locales with rustic charm are all recommended––and so is sleeping under the stars.
Celebrate in Style: With no one around, you can make as much noise as you want, and if you’re by the water (whether it’s a lake or a beach) you can set off your own fireworks without worrying about starting a fire. Build a bonfire in the sand and roast some marshmallows so you can snack on some s’mores while you watch the show.
What to Wear to Weddings: The Do's and Don't's of Dressing for Someone Else's Big Day
Figuring out what to wear to a wedding can be tricky. First you have to decipher the dress code––is it black tie, cocktail, or casual? Black tie calls for a cocktail dress or floor length gown, while for cocktail, dresses that hit above the knee are most appropriate. Casual may sound like “anything goes,” but it’s better to avoid jeans and t-shirts and opt for a skirt or summer dress.
But even with that out of the way, there are still plenty of questions. Some are pretty straightforward. Can I wear black? (Sure, if it’s a late afternoon or evening wedding). How about white? (Definitely not, but you already know that).
But others are a little more complicated, like finding the right balance between subtly showing off your personal style and stealing the show. A good rule of thumb is to allow yourself a maximum of one statement piece, whether it’s jewelry, a killer shoe, or a great dress.
Since a day wedding calls for something a little more colorful, make a printed dress the centerpiece for your look. Prints are fun, flirty, and feminine, and they add interest while giving you the freedom to choose a simple silhouette that won’t distract. They work best with minimal accessories, so opt for neutral shades, plus one item in a pop color that will bring out the tones in the print.
For night, you can never go wrong with a little black dress. Choose a simple silhouette, like a long, slinky maxi, with one design detail that sets it apart––for this dress, it’s the slit. A basic foundation lets you have a lot more fun with accessories, so add some drama with a bold cuff and a statement necklace. Finish up your look with heels and a clutch in neutral tones, and get ready to dance all night.

It’s time to break out your polo shirts and pleated skirts: Monday was the first day of Wimbledon, and the tournament is making a splash on and off the court.
In his first match of the tournament, Nadal took a hard-won victory against Martin Klizan, coming back after last year’s first round knock out, while Federer decisively defeated Paolo Lorenzi, making himself a serious contender for an eighth Wimbledon title.
But even if you’re not into watching two players smack a ball back and forth, there are plenty of reasons to tune in.
Here’s what to watch for if you’re not a tennis fan:
-There’s some serious eye candy.
-You might spot the Beckhams, Kate Middleton, or even the Queen in the stands.
-Head-to-toe white, athletic-inspired apparel, and crisp, preppy dressing are all major trends for summer, so it’s the perfect place to find a little warm-weather style inspiration.
-The hats. Anywhere else, accessories would fall under the more general umbrella of ‘style’, but these toppers are in a class all their own.
-Last (but certainly not least) it’s the perfect excuse to whip up some tea sandwiches, serve Pimms cocktails, and spend the day playing lawn games in the backyard with your friends (and maybe watch some tennis too).
Here’s what you need to throw the perfect viewing party across the pond:
What to Wear:
The Wimbledon dress code has gotten stricter over the years, but that doesn’t mean you have to require guests to wear white head to toe. While we love a little white dress for just about any occasion from May through September, sundresses in lightweight fabrics, bright summer shades, and floral prints look just as lovely.
Hair and Makeup:
Take a page out of the players’ book and experiment with an updo. Putting your hair up is a great way to get your hair out of your face and elongate your neck, but unless you’ll be running around, opt for a slightly more undone style than what you’re seeing on the court, like a loose braid or a messy bun. The wrap up is a great tool for getting a perfectly-styled bun in seconds.
For makeup, go for a sunkissed, natural, barely-there glow. To get the look, we love this lip & cheek tint, creme bronzer, and luminizer from RMS Beauty––these are the same products used to get the fresh-faced, dewy look of the models in J. Crew ads. It’s the perfect no-makeup makeup. To call this brand a cult classic would be an understatement.
If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard, set up shop there––all you need is a folding table for food and drinks. If you live in a more urban area, head to your local park and lay out some picnic blankets for guests to sit on.
Tea sandwiches are easy and in theme. They’re traditionally made with cream cheese and cucumber, but PB&J is another classic option. You can also get creative: try making them with ham and cheese, prosciutto and fig, or chicken and pesto for a meat option. Or, for something lighter and sweeter, try them with apple and brie or blue cheese and red grapes. Cut the crusts off and divide them into triangles and you’re good to go.
Pimms is about as British as the Queen, and it’s part of not one but many refreshing cocktail recipes that are perfect for a lazy summer afternoon. Set up a bar with Pimms, sparkling lemonade, cava, mint, cucumber, and fresh fruit. Orange and strawberry are traditional, but most berries should be a great complement to this cocktail. Let guests make their own drinks––those who don’t drink can enjoy the chilled lemonade and fruit. Here are two recipes to get you started:
Pimms Original: pour 1 part Pimms and 3 parts chilled lemonade into a glass with ice. Top off with mint, cucumber, orange, and strawberry.
Pimms Royale: pour 25 mL Pimms into a champagne flute, top off with cava, and garnish with a strawberry.
The Party Game:
Set up a badminton net or a croquet course. Lawn games are a great background activity because everyone can play, and it’s easy to join in at any time.
A: I have a pretty extreme foundation habit — I’m always looking at new brands, formulations and technologies. I can’t even count how many different ones I own!
Q: What is your new favorite find?
A: I love my VenEffect Neck Cream. It’s so fabulous!
Q: My friends and family always come to me for advice about_______
A: Makeup (of course!), and also skincare and aesthetic treatments. I try to stay in the know and do my homework and I test everything on myself so I can give first hand opinions and insights.
Q: What is one thing that people are always surprised to find out about you?
A: My parents are English, I was born in Canada and I grew up in Texas. But I don’t say “eh” or “y’all.”
Q: What excites you most about working with Joyus?
A: Joyus does an amazing job of curating the best of the best beauty products, so I’m a little like a kid in a candy store. I love that I’ll be able to research and play with everything and then share what I discover.
Q: What is the one thing that helps you live beautifully every day?
A: I try to keep a positive mental attitude. Negativity can take you to a really ugly place.

We all like to treat ourselves in different ways. For some, it’s a designer handbag. For others, it’s a week long vacation somewhere temperatures never drop below 75 degrees.
Whatever your obsession, we’re giving you full license to indulge in it. (We don’t think you should need a reason to spoil yourself, but it never hurts to have an excuse.)
Wednesday was National Splurge Day, and we already ran a site wide sale, because we believe that, whether it’s a big ticket item or just a little slice of joy, there’s no money better spent than on something that helps you live a little more beautifully. But we want to keep the fun going. Why not turn National Splurge Day into Treat Yourself Week? You know you deserve it.
You probably already have your eye on something––don’t we all? But in case you need a little inspiration, check out what we’ll be splurging on below. Instead of blowing your money on something you can only enjoy for a few days, we picked things that will stand the test of time and make you feel good again and again, so you don’t even have to feel guilty.
A Weekend Getaway:
Relax, recharge, and catch up on some light summer reading from the comfort of your own private cabana… with poolside cocktail service. Embrace the philosophy that nothing gets you ready for the week ahead like feeling the sand between your toes.
When your schedule is packed from the time your alarm goes off in the morning to the time your head hits the pillow at the end of the day, it can be hard to find time to pamper yourself. But by turning part of your routine into something a little more luxurious, you can indulge a little every day.
You might not need a killer new pair of shoes or a butter-soft leather bag, but if you’ll wear them all the time and feel fabulous every time you do, it might be time to pull the trigger on the piece you’ve had your eye on.
A:Entertaining and party planning with style and originality. I am not a trained professional, but I love it and wish I could spend all day as a party host!
Q:What do you love shopping for the most?
A:When I’m not at the grocery store shopping for two hungry guys (one in his 30’s and one under the age of 7), I love shopping for dresses— thank goodness it’s summer time! It’s “My” season!
Q:What is your new favorite find?

A: Party planning, parenting (how did I sleep/potty train, great activities for kids, etc), and style/ wardrobe suggestions.
Q:What is one thing that people are always surprised to find out about you?

Q:What excites you most about working with Joyus?

Are you stuck in a makeup rut? Not sure how to create a natural look for the day? Struggle to find a look that can transition from day to night?Whatever the case may be, we’ve got you covered. Here are three of our favorite (and super easy) eye makeup looks that anyone can pull off. There’s one for day, one for night, and one that will see you through from sunrise to last call.
Contouring is the trick to drawing attention to your eyes without looking like you’re wearing tons of makeup––or even any makeup at all. Follow these steps to create the perfect subtle day look.
There’s no red carpet makeup look more iconic than the smokey eye, and it’s easy to see why. A smokey eye is classic, universally flattering, sexy, and easy to do without the help of a professional makeup artist. You can try this look in any shade, but chocolate brown is dramatic without being too stark. Follow these steps to create the perfect smokey eye.
You already know that a little black dress, statement jewelry, and heels will see you through just about any night out.
But where’s the fun in that? Just because you can wear an LBD anywhere doesn’t mean you should wear it everywhere. Summer nights are packed with occasions that call for something a little more fun, a little more laid back, or a little more colorful.
So what should you do when your go-to going out ensemble doesn’t feel quite right? Check out our must haves for beach nights, summer concerts, and twilight garden parties so you’ll never be a girl with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
For a Sunset Bonfire at the Beach
Sunny days on the coast inevitably turn into chilly nights, and after roasting a marshmallow or two, you’ll probably go home smelling like campfire. Keep it comfortable with these essentials:
School is coming to an end and as vacation begins for the kids, I am gearing up for a few fast and fun summer projects that will make me feel like a hero. Here is what I am up to.
Turning piles of paper into works of art with Artimus
This is my favorite quick project to turn my kid’s masterpieces into a beautiful coffee table book. Since my daughter was 4, we have sat together to comb through all the year’s art, pick our favorites and ship them off to Artimus. This year I am late getting her art together, but I am determined to get it out the door before she turns 8 in July!
Updating my outdoor space for summer
Our outdoor space is looking dated and lately, it has been making me want to update the area. So over the last 2 weeks I have been power shopping on One Kings Lane, West Elm and the Restoration Hardware outlet. Here is a sneak peek at what’s coming this month to my outdoor space:
Sharpening the needles for a little knitting
I have been feeling the urge to get my knitting needles back out (I must be nesting J). The last time I knitted, I was pregnant with my son and managed to knit the sweater he wore home from the hospital. This time I am planning on knitting rows upon rows of little booties since everyone I know seems to be pregnant (again!), which should only take a few hours,
For me, the key to any summer project, is finding something that can be completed quickly or it won’t get done. I love the idea of creating beautiful things – and for me, the easier, the better.
When you think of summer style, you probably think of bright, vivid shades. But summer’s chicest color pairing is much more understated. With looks that run the gamut from exotic to nautical-inspired, indigo and white bring a crisp, refreshing touch to warm weather dressing that will make you excited to get up and get dressed every morning.
Hair product you have to have: Klorane dry shampoo. I try to wash my hair sparingly so dry shampoo is a lifesaver.
Date night look: Before going out I like to do a mask like the GlamGlow Tingling & Exfoliating Face Mask, so my skin is already glowing before I put my makeup on. For makeup I like Blinc eyeliner, mascara, and bronzer.
Frozen treats are an essential part of summer. As temperatures rise, a double scoop of mint chocolate chip starts to sound better and better. But if you’re trying to stick to a healthy diet this bikini season, you might want to opt for something less sweet next time you hear the ice cream truck’s cheery tune.
Smoothies are a great way to get the satisfaction of ice cream with a fraction of the calories. This list of all-natural recipes are as healthy as they are delicious, and all you need to make them whenever you want is a good blender and some fresh fruit.
Visit this link for the full list of recipes, or check out the highlight breakdown below––there’s something for every occasion, from pre-workout warm ups to lazy days in the sun.
The Dessert Substitute: #2 Thin Mint
This tastes like the popular girl scout cookie, but with almond milk and chocolate protein powder subbed in, plus a cup of spinach to give you 300% of your daily-recommended vitamin A, it’s healthier than you’d think!
For the Kale-Obsessed: #6 Killer Kale
Ripe bananas cut the bitter taste of kale to make this low-calorie green smoothie a little sweeter. It’s packed with fiber, calcium, iron, and protein to give your body the nutrients it needs.
For the Sun-Worshipper: #12 Endless Summer
This delicious summery smoothie is packed with watermelon to give you a healthy dose of the amino acid lycopene, which helps protect against harmful UV rays.
The Pre-Workout Boost: #17 Blueberry-Lavender
If your first thought is of heavier flavors when you think ‘protein shake’, try this fruity concoction to switch things up. The maca powder and antioxidants from the blueberries will increase your endurance and strength without weighing you down.
Rest & Recover: #24 Strawberry Peach Oatmeal
Oats, yogurt, and chia seeds make this smoothie thicker, so it’s a great meal substitute after a workout. Protein from the greek yogurt will speed up your recovery time.
For the Thanksgiving Lover: #28 Pumpkin Cranberry
Who says it can’t be a holiday every day? This delicious, festive treat is packed with healthy fats.
The Skinny Smoothie: #33 Pink Drink
Low calorie greens and grapefruit juice will up your veggie intake while helping to boost weight loss.
The Skin Perfecter: #37 Blackberry and Basil
This smoothie is such a refreshing way to start your day. It’s packed with fiber, and the oil in basil will help to keep your skin healthy, clear, and radiant.
For the Early Riser: #39 Green Tea
Skip the coffee and get your caffeine boost from something that’s better for you––this smoothie. Green tea also helps to boost fat burning and lower cholesterol levels.
A day at the Alameda Antiques Faire. The Perfect furs, flowers, and French accessories. Found.
I have lived in the Bay Area for many years, but it wasn’t until this past spring that I made it to the market of all markets, the Alameda Point Antiques Faire. It only runs the first Sunday of each month, so it takes planning to get there, but once you do, you won’t want to leave!
People who know me know that I am a vintage hound. From dresses to jewelry to original and reproduction “California country” décor, I love vintage shopping.
When I stumbled upon Gypsy Road Studio’s booth of amazing statement jewelry from the US and Europe, I knew I was in trouble. I ended up with this French bauble––I can’t say it was a bargain, but I love the art deco inspired look of the piece. The stones are small, but the tomato red color packs a big punch, and I couldn’t help but imagine it with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to a simple black dress. I also persuaded the owner to come show us her wares at Joyus – stay tuned!
Two rows over, I dove into a bin of vintage earrings. At $5 a pair, I couldn’t resist. I picked out a few pairs and I have to say, the gold Monet earrings are a new favorite of mine with their sleek lines.
Travelling aisle and after aisle, I discovered painted dressers and gigantic metallic letters perfect for our cabin in Tahoe, though unfortunately the house is already fully furnished. I did however manage to nab these three amazing glass jars at $25 each for my spring and summer table settings. The height and proportions are perfect for hydrangeas, tulips, and roses alike.
Of course, I couldn’t leave without at least a few impractical finds. Enter not one, but two faux fur coats each under $50. The white one has an Aspen, LA, and NYC glam vibe while the leopard coat seemed a little out there. But once I tried it on, it looked surprisingly wearable for fall weekdays and weekends alike with it’s fit and flare shape.
I am always hunting for great markets, from the March au Puce in Paris to the bazaars of India, but what a delight to finally explore a fabulous one right in my backyard. If you’re in the Bay Area, even for the weekend, and love the thrill of the hunt, this antiques faire is a must!
Pack your swimsuits and sunscreen! Memorial Day is Monday and it’s one of the first opportunities to get out of town and enjoy gorgeous summer weather.
A three day weekend calls for something special, so we put together our dream itineraries and packing lists for three destinations close enough to home to escape to on short notice. If you already have plans, bon voyage! Maybe you’ll find some inspiration for a future sunny day here. But if not, why not be spontaneous? We did all the research, so all you have to do is go.
The Destination: Napa Valley, California
The Itinerary: Book a chauffeured tour or buy tickets for the wine train to see the wineries safely, or spend a more low-key afternoon wandering downtown and sampling different varietals at the tasting rooms. Then pack a picnic and spend some time outdoors hiking through the countryside. Since food and wine go together like, well, food and wine, indulge in a gourmet dinner before finishing out the evening soaking in the jacuzzi at your hotel.
Sleep: The contemporary Andaz hotel is situated right in the center of downtown Napa, so it’s the perfect crash pad if you’re planning to explore the town on foot. For a ‘green meets minimalist luxury’ vibe, book a room at the ultra-modern eco-friendly boutique hotel Bardessono in nearby Yountville.
Dine: See what all the hype is about and try the nine course prix fixe menu at The French Laundry. The restaurant has three Michelin stars and is regularly listed as one of Restaurant Magazine’s top 50 restaurants in the world, so it’s worth trying before you die. If you can’t get a table, try the more laid back, rustic seasonal menu at The Girl and the Fig in nearby Sonoma.
Sun, Sand, and Surf
The Destination: South Beach, Florida
The Itinerary: It’s Miami, so you could spend all day laying on the beach. But if you’re feeling restless, take a break from the sun to visit the galleries in the Design District or sample some Cuban food in Calle Ocho. Then watch the sun set over the ocean with a tropical drink in hand.
Sleep: The Raleigh hotel has been a South Beach icon since 1941, so it has a cool, laid back vintage vibe. If modern is more your style, check out the new W South Beach. Floor to ceiling windows will give you an unparalleled view of the beach.
Dine: You don’t have to go far for a good meal: Restaurant Michael Schwartz serves up thoughtfully sourced American fare on the outdoor patio of the Raleigh hotel. For a quick bite, hit up Stanzione 87 for authentic Neapolitan pizzas.
Sleep: The Cosmopolitan is young, hip, and modern. And the lobby boasts a three-story crystal chandelier with a bar inside––try one of their speciality cocktails and catch a live band in the bottom level. For a more classic, elegant option that still feels vibrant and current, try the Wynn. The complex has an impressive restaurant collection, sprawling casino, three nightclubs, a beach club, and a cirque du soleil show so there’s something to do at all hours of the day.
Dine: Steak gets a trendy, modern makeover at STK. Or, make a reservation at Spago and try the restaurant that brought fine dining to the desert.
What are you waiting for? Book your getaway and start packing!
With June just around the corner, it’s hard not to look forward to the weekends a little more than usual. Summer means more beautiful days, more weekend plans, and more time away from the office. So naturally there’s no better time to invest in a great casual wardrobe.
Denim, the most iconic off duty wardrobe staple, is taking center stage this season. But with so many cuts to choose from and so many ways to style them, choosing the perfect pair of jeans can be overwhelming.
While we believe that every woman should own all of these key cuts and colors, we also want to help you find the right pair for you. So whether you’re looking to try something new, replace an old pair, or just build out your denim wardrobe, this guide will get you started on the right foot.
The most classic and popular style, the skinny is a great all around jean. It looks good on any body type, and can be dressed up or dressed down.
A good pair of black jeans just might be the most versatile item in your closet. You can swap them in for your trousers and wear them to work, you can wear them out at night, or you can style them with a cozy sweater and flats for an easy casual look.
Yesterday marked the kickoff of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and with entries from film legends Jean-Luc Godard, Marion Cotillard, and Meryl Streep, this year’s selection is shaping up to be as iconic as any in the festival’s history. Photos from the first day are already hitting the web, we’re feeling inspired.
There are a lot of things to love about this star-studded week and a half in the French Riviera: the people, the style, the food, the weather, a certain “je ne sais quoi” hanging in the air.
And seriously, how does every French woman manage to always look effortlessly stylish and eternally 25 at the same time?
Since we’re not sunbathing side by side with them on the Mediterranean coast, we couldn’t ask. But to fete the festival, we pulled together a list of five tips, from skincare secrets to summer reading, to help you live a little more like a French girl, no matter what your commitment level, even if you’re far away.
Looking to brush up on your language skills, or never taken a French lesson in your life? Luckily, these are both available in translation.
Accessible: The Little Prince
Whether you remember this book from when you were young or you’re totally new to it, it’s a classic that shouldn’t be missed.
Involved: The Stranger
You might have read this book back in high school, but if you haven’t revisited it in a while, it’s worth a second look. As the quintessential French Existentialist novel, it’s a quick, easy read that you’ll find something new in every time you pick it up.
Accessible: Baguette, Cheese and Good Bordeaux
The best thing about wine and cheese is that you don’t have to know how to cook to make it. Just slice up some baguette and you’ll be on your way.
If you’re more confident in the kitchen, throw a dinner party and whip up this classic French menu.
Parisian chic has come to be synonymous with easy, effortless style, and the key to pulling it off is in keeping things simple. Avoid wearing one label head to toe, mix high with low and old with new, balance out something comfortable with something eye catching, and voila!
Look like the most stylish thing to ever roll right out of bed in cigarette jeans, feminine flats, and a loose, easy blouse.
Involved: Take things up a notch by styling a knockout designer piece with well made basics that flatter you. The statement piece will do all the talking; it’s the rest of the outfit’s job to make you look your best.
You may have heard the phrase “French girls don’t get face lifts”. And while it’s partially a myth, a good skincare routine will let you get away with less makeup, and keep the wrinkles (not to mention the needles) away. When it comes to hair and makeup, go for minimal product with maximum drama.
The trick to eating well and staying slim (other than coffee and cigarettes) is spending more time on your feet. Make the time to walk somewhere you’d usually drive and take in the sights in your city while burning off a breakfast of chocolate croissants.
Accessible: Next weekend, do your grocery shopping at a local farmer’s market. You’ll go home with healthier foods, and you’ll get to spend some time wandering outside.
Involved: Look up scenic walks near you and plan a day trip. You can explore a new neighborhood, or plan a picnic in the park.
Graduation season is in full swing! If someone in your life is getting their diploma this spring, you should send them off in style. These gifts cover the gamut from pretty to practical, so there’s something here for everyone (and every budget).
The Love Knot Earrings: The love knot collection was designed to represent the many twists and turns that life takes you through, so they’re the perfect gift for someone who’s just starting out on their journey.
The Featherweight Earrings: These pretty, delicate earrings come in three fun, unique shapes, and they’re not called ‘featherweight’ for nothing: they’re so light, she’ll be able to wear them all day and all night.
The Monogrammed Cuff: The best gifts are the ones that feel personal, and what’s more personal than custom jewelry? This made-to-order cuff is the perfect way to coin a signature look.
The Essential Blazer: Bye bye college sweatshirt, hello blazers and pencil skirts. This impeccably tailored jacket is the perfect starting point for a top notch work wardrobe.
Splurge vs Save: the Dress: She’ll nail that first job interview in one of these pretty, professional little numbers.
Splurge vs Save: the Bag: No girl should be without a great handbag. You wear it every day, and you carry your life around in it, so it’s one of the first things she’ll want to invest in.
Space and Money Savers:
The Berry Breeze: This fridge sanitizer is a must for any new grad who’s trying to stick to a healthy diet. It makes fruits, veggies, and other perishables last up to three times longer, so she won’t have to throw out food before she has time to eat it if she’s grocery shopping for one.
The Mini Elliptical: Just starting out, there’s no way she’ll have room for a home gym, but this mini elliptical is small enough to fit in even the teeniest of apartments.
The Laundress Set: Save a fortune on dry cleaning and keep favorite clothes from staining with this fabric care set.
Two weeks ago, after more than 40 years of being a doctor, my mom retired from her medical practice at the age of almost 84. Funny enough, while most people find this admirable and remarkable (and it is), to me it’s just the norm. It’s not strange to me that she is contemplating continuing to work 1-2 days a week at a local clinic. In fact, I think she should. I suppose it is no surprise that I have inherited my own worldview of work, vocation, and the desire to never retire from my mom.
What is remarkable to me is that each of us has a story like mine about our moms. Their sheer fierceness, their “I’m going to get it doneness”, their toughness, and their tenacity. It may be there all along, but it seems to show up at a whole new level with mothers. Perhaps it is the sacrifice, resilience, and sweat equity moms put into raising their children that makes the other challenges in life seem like a walk in the park.
I am not sure, but I know that whatever it is, I am extremely grateful on Mother’s Day to have the ultimate role model. To watch a woman right beside me get it done all day, every day for almost 40 years with no fanfare or fuss is much more empowering than to admire from afar someone famous or more successful in the world of business.
So here is to all moms who show up every day, fierce in the business that really matters, the business of life, and show us all how it is done. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!
Finding the Perfect Perfume… With Everything But Your Nose
We just launched Pinrose, a brand new fragrance label, and we’re completely in love with all ten scents in the debut collection. Between soft, feminine florals, a musky, fresh-laundry-inspired fragrance, bright, playful citrus scents, and a sweet, smoky, whiskey-and-vanilla concoction, there’s something here for everyone.
If you’re a fragrance fanatic, or just not sure what you like, you might want to try out the starter kit, which includes samples of all ten scents.
Or, you can leave it to fate. Following your nose to the perfect perfume can be tricky, but through synesthesia, you can use images, music, emotions, and even your favorite cocktail to uncover the fragrance that’s perfect for you.
If a piñata full of candy doesn’t sound appealing anymore, you can get creative with what’s inside. Fill it up with fun party favors like lip balm, hair ties, or perfume petals, or spring for one bigger prize (like a spa gift card) that goes to whoever breaks it open. DIY instructions here.
What’s your go-to date night look? Pretty natural since my boyfriend doesn’t like lipstick :( I usually play up the eyes with neutral shadows and and rim with black liner and lots of mascara. I finish it off with peach blush, highlighter, a bit of bronzer and lip balm.
What trend do you want to try? Blue shadow. I’m a little reluctant to try it because I have blue eyes but it’s too gorgeous to pass up!
Beauty innovation you’re excited for (or wish existed): wearable technology! We are seeing everything from a UV tracker that tells you when you need to cover up/put on sunscreen to a device that alerts you when you have bad posture.
We’ve just launched a capsule collection from one of our favorite brands, Chaiken, and we’re beyond excited to share it with you!
Chaiken is known for being sleek, stylish, impeccably cut, and office-friendly. Shop now.
When you see blazers, trousers, and pencil skirts, your first thought is probably of office attire. But when styled right, workwear staples can actually become some of the chicest off duty pieces in your wardrobe. By pairing a crisp blazer with, say, a pretty bohemian sundress, or styling a tailored pair of trousers with a luxe oversized sweater, you can transform suit separates into some of the strongest styling pieces in your arsenal.
To help you get inspired, here are four looks to get you started.
The Button Up: There’s no limit to what you can do with a simple white shirt, but we love it paired with an edgy pair of leggings and booties you can kick around in. Buy it here.
The Pencil Skirt: Worn with a moto jacket and bold jewelry, the pretty pencil skirt instantly becomes a sexy night out staple. Buy it here.
The Blazer: To tone down the polished look of a blazer, pair it with a flowy, bohemian sundress. The two pieces will balance each other out beautifully. Buy it here.
The Trouser: There’s nothing boring about a slim cut trouser paired with an easy oversized sweater and luxe, laid back accessories. Buy it here.
Loving SJP’s chic, minimalist tote or lusting after this $298 bag from Kate Spade? Get the look for less here: http://bit.ly/1lwq3rP
Aside from being nearly identical to the designer version, the Sorial Gramercy tote is only $98. Top that off with a timeless design, plenty of space for all of your daily essentials, and four fun spring shades to choose from, and this tote is the total package.
It’s no wonder celebs like Reese Witherspoon, Martha Stewart, Molly Sims, and Kim Kardashian have all been spotted carrying Sorial styles all over Hollywood.
Soft, candy-colored hues are all the rage right now, and we’re loving the playful, feminine vibe they bring to spring dressing.
If you’re usually more at home dressed in shades of black, white, grey and beige, knowing how to style pastels can be tricky, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun. To help you get in touch with your sweeter side, we pulled together three easy, effortless ways to try the trend.
You can wear them from head to toe…
…Or go bright and pair them with white denim…
…Or pair them with something edgier to play up the contrast between sexy and sweet.
Spring is finally here––and with it comes t-shirt weather, outdoor barbecues, and the start of festival season. Even if you haven’t been counting down the days left until Coachella since last May, you can still get in on the free-spirited fun with these fashion and beauty must haves––they’re just as perfect for an afternoon in the park, an evening of live music, or a day lounging on the beach.
Strange Beautiful Polish Trio in Turkish Taffy, Bandaid, and Pussywillow
Neutral nails are in, and in a sea of neon and bright color, you’ll stand out from the festival crowd by keeping your mani minimalist. This polish trio is curated to give you stylishly mismatched fingers and toes, so make sure to give yourself a pedi, too!
These sheer, natural pigments will give you a golden, sunkissed glow that looks totally natural. And the components of this makeup palette can be clipped together or taken apart, so you can keep everything you need for quick fixes with you, and leave the rest behind.
To celebrate, we want to help you live better. Staying healthy should be fun and exciting, and lasting changes come from adding things to your life that make you feel great rather than taking things away.
Taking care of yourself starts with great food, and even if you don’t have time to hit the farmers market once a week, you can still put a balanced, healthy meal on the table with new services like Munchery (https://munchery.com) and Sweet Roots (http://www.sweetrootsnyc.com).

Congratulations to our Resolutions Contest Winner!
We want to take a moment to say a special congratulations to Margie K, the winner of our Joyus Resolutions Photo Contest! Last month, we asked you to share your New Year’s Resolutions for 2014 with us on Instagram and tell us why you were motivated to achieve them.
Our winner, Margie, vowed to keep up her healthy lifestyle for her three sons. Two years ago, Margie had a wakeup call when she was diagnosed as borderline diabetic. She decided things needed to change and started exercising and eating better. Margie’s hard work paid off- she lost 40 pounds and has managed to maintain her new, healthier body. To help Margie celebrate her terrific achievement we’re giving her $150 worth of fitness products. Congratulations Margie!
A packed closet can be difficult to navigate. Make the most of everything you own with the help of apps like Stylitics and Closet. They’ll help you take inventory of your wardrobe so you can figure out what you have and what you no longer need.
The “One In One Out” Rule
For every new piece of clothing you buy, get rid of something you no longer wear. An overstuffed closet makes it difficult to keep track of all your clothes. Try selling the things you no longer wear to consignment shops or trade them for new pieces at a clothing swap.
Sell It Online
Don’t have time to drop your unwanted clothes off at a local consignment store? Sights like Threadflip.com and therealreal.com will pick up your clothes for you!
So what are you waiting for? Get your closet under control today!
What’s your resolution for 2014? Whatever it is, the Joyus team wants to help you achieve it! All you have to do is upload a picture of yourself to Instagram with the hashtag #JoyusResolutions showing us how motivated you are to make your goal a reality. Our hosts will select one lucky winner and announce their choice on February 2nd’s episode of Conversation Piece. The contest winner will receive a bundle of goodies to help them towards achieving their New Year’s resolution. So what are you waiting for? Enter today and show us how you’re going to make 2014 your best year yet!
1. Set achievable goals. Setting unrealistic goals makes giving up on them all too tempting. Instead of vowing to work out every day, make it your goal to work out three times a week if you normally only hit the gym twice. If you choose a resolution you’re able to stick with you’ll be much more likely to form a lasting habit.
Don’t have enough time to hit up the gym? Sneak in an extra work out at home with our bestselling elliptical trainer.
2. Make your goals tangible. Writing down your goals, or even just saying them out loud helps make them real. Trying to eat healthier? Write your goal down on a post-it and put it on your fridge so you’re reminded of it next time you reach for a snack.
3. Have fun! The easiest way to motivate yourself to stick to your resolutions is to make them fun. If you’re trying to spend more time with your friends and family, plan activities for you to do together. Instead of hanging around the house, go for a hike or eat out at that new restaurant you’ve been meaning to try.
Trying to drink more water? Infuse favor into your fluids with the aqua zinger.
4. Track your progress. Seeing how far you’ve come can be a powerful motivator to stick with your goals. Keep a journal or snap photos to record your accomplishments and remind yourself to stick with your goals. Upload photos of your progress to Instagram with the hashtag #JoyusResolutions for a chance to win a bundle of goodies that will help you stick to your resolutions.
5. Celebrate your success. Reward yourself for achieving your goals, staying true to your resolutions is hard work! If you manage to eat healthy throughout the week, reward yourself with a glass of wine on the weekend. Lost weight? Splurge on a new pair of skinny jeans to show of your toned physique.
