I always attempt to approach design from a fresh perspective. I love seeking out and adding a bit of unexpected pop to the ordinary. I applied this practice to the arrangement of books on the shelves in my library in Seattle. I removed the dust jackets and displayed them by color rather than the usual Dewey Decimal.
Also don’t be afraid to hang art on the front of the bookcase to tie in some of the book colors you have displayed.
Flickr user Chotda has created the supreme example of this technique. So cool.
If you have a lot of color in your living room then think about displaying books with the spines turned in or covering them completely in white butcher paper.
