The Down Low on Paleo

Pay-lee-o. It’s one of the fastest growing diets in the last few years based on caveman-ish type foods (high protein, low carbs). Like this awesome grass-fed beef jerky, dried fruit and nut pack from Steve’s Original we’re featuring in our Energy Boost selection. 

Paleo is based on a hunter-gatherer diet of foods consumed during the Paleolithic era, which ended about 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture. The idea is an ideal diet for human health and well-being is one that resembles this ancestral diet. So what can you eat?  Fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts are all good, but you stay away from grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.

I’m not one for diets and there are a lot of flaws in some of the assumptions around the Paleo way of eating. If you want to dig in further, my friend Darya at Summer Tomato lays it all out for you.  So while I don’t believe in diets, I do love healthy guideposts and the idea of more fruits and veggies, more protein and less processed food, sugar and carbs is a good one. To have snacks handy that fit within those guideposts makes my life easier (and hopefully yours), especially on the go, on a hike and at 3pm when the snack attack hits.
