Creating a Cocktail Bar at Home

I have a cocktail bar set up in my home so that guests can mix their own drinks whenever they want.  Whether you find a great bar cart, or you use a dresser or a console table creating your own this holiday season will make it super easy to entertain.  Here are a few of my favorites!

Fall is here - September 22nd!
The thing I love most about this time of year is that people begin to invite friends over for game nights, and long dinners that seem to last for hours around the dining room table. When I think of entertaining I immediately begin to think of the resources that I have around me to use as decor. This pic was taken last Fall in Connecticut - I threw a brunch for a group of friends and pulled in fall flowers and pumpkins.  SO easy.  I also added some of the hydrangea that was drying inside a lantern or two.
Mums aren’t my favorite flower but here, with the branches in this contemporary space. I love it. Mums are truly inexpensive and when they are grouped by color it works.

Of course, orange is an amazing color (I love it even more now that I am at Joyus!), and with the changing of the leaves, it is also prominent outdoors. The pairing of the blue vases with the orange = super fabulous.

This is a bit rustic for me, but it is an interesting way to display your flowers with your favorite seasonal foods (hello pumpkin pie).

I adore plaid, and this vintage tin is the perfect companion to the arrangement of fall leaves.

Here’s a creative way to use grapevine…

This is a fun harvest dinner I put together while living in Seattle - the centerpiece: clear acrylic containers with fresh fruit and veggies.  At the end of the party everyone took the fruits and veggies home.

Each place setting had folded card stock under the plate in a copper tone - loved this DIY idea. Burlap bags that I labeled with each guests name held the flatware…

Fall is Around the Corner
September is an exciting time of year for me because it kicks off the season that I love the most - the holidays! But, before the big holiday decor transformation of my place I begin by looking for easy ways to change up my space for the Fall.  It’s nice to give your space a little facelift the way you do your wardrobe each season.  Here’s what I’m thinking…

How do you transform your home Fall?  Post a pic to my Joyus Home Facebook Page - I would love to be inspired by your spaces too! Of course, all of the above you can find on Joyus under Home.  Happy decorating!

Craftsmanship Makes all of the Difference
Although I am the Home & Lifestyle Host at Joyus I love to look at fashion and watch how interior design is inspired by what comes down the runway.  I also appreciate well made things.  I am a huge fan of Hermes, so when we were able to attend the coolest event called Hermes’ Festival des Metiers; A Rendez-vous with Hermes Craftsmen I couldn’t wait. It was absolutely incredible to see the amount of care, pride and handwork that goes into each and every Hermes product. We were able to chat with the Artisans themselves and watch as they worked, the intricacy and precision with which they handled each detail was fascinating…

This silkscreened scarf is printed with 10 different colors and each layer must be printed perfectly in line with the last or the scarf is thrown out

One artisan will work on an entire bag from start to finish to ensure quality, there is so much attention to detail he finishes less than 2 bags in a
week…

Of course, I am partial to this bag but since I have an extra “e” in my name I think Kelly Sparks (our Fashion Guru) needs this one.  He was working on a gorgeous cobalt blue bag while we were there.

Frenchified
I absolutely love all things French.  Macaroons, the Eiffel Tower, French wine, and I even had a birthday soiree in Quebec that was at a French restaurant.  Here’s the cover of the invite…me as Marie Antoinette…
The table will show you that even carnations can be beautiful when they are grouped together in silver cups, by candlelight.  Of course the gorgeous candelabra’s didn’t hurt to up the elegance of the evening.

When it comes to decor that adds that French flair, the architectural detail and the gold accents - so much drama - so much history.

Even a couple of pieces add such a glamorous sensibility to the room.

The thing I love the most are chandeliers…I have them in every room in my house.

Maybe I should book a trip to Paris to shop for Joyus?  Write in and say you want to see a video shot from there - I promise to bring you back something pretty.

Rustic Elegance

I love to combine rustic elements with elegant accent pieces for a party.  Many times I pull  inspiration from the venue, this time it was the rustic  tables, creamy white masonry and arched windows with stunning metalwork.   it was the perfect setting for an intimate dinner party with personalized artistic touches…

Mix in pieces like our Olivewood bowls, with a beautiful silver candelabra.  Or our Cake Vintage Flatware with modern shaped dishes.  This mix is warm and inviting and makes you want to sit around the table for awhile.

I Love Cheese

Cheese is my weakness. I love all types of cheese - from stinky cheese to triple cream there is never an occasion where I feel cheese does not belong.  My favorite cheese shop is actually in Seattle, Delaurenti, but I am certainly exploring the cheese mongers (experts on cheese) here in SF.

Here’s a shot of Delaurenti…can  you see why I was in heaven!

Now, if you are looking for guidelines because it can be overwhelming here are a few tips.

Of course, I found the cutest cheese markers that I have ever seen so I had to sell them on Joyus.  The cheese knives are great too, so great that we sold out the first time around.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

I know this is a bit off topic from my Home Expert category but sometimes we get feedback at Joyus that they are a size 12 or 14.  Remember that doesn’t define beauty.  It’s funny as you become more experienced in life your definition of beauty becomes more refined and has a deeper meaning.  I think that it not only becomes clearer that beauty does shine from the inside out.  Although I must say that I still purchase the majority of beauty products at Joyus from Mikela.

I think when I am old I will give a nod to Iris Apfel…she is fun, glam, crazy, and embraces her style completely.

Okay, maybe I won’t be that crazy but definitely will remind myself that I can still where my big cocktail rings, I don’t have to give up my room full of jewelry, and live my life with style.

Currently, I remind myself that beauty can come in all shapes and sizes.  I think that woman especially put so much pressure on themselves to look like women in the magazines.  I mean look at Adele….

Gorgeous!

And the classic beauties like Sophia Loren…

Plastic surgery, has become something that is an everyday topic and yet the women I admire have never changed a thing and see their look as unique.  Meryl is a good example…

Although I do think good skin care is key!

I want to age like a classic beauty with the spunk of Iris…here’s to the years ahead, acceptance, and being better then ever!

Talent Behind and in Front of the Camera

Two years ago the Nate Berkus Show launched and I was fortunate enough to do quite a few Entertaining Segments on the show.  National television is a funny experience.  You are escorted in to the studio by a PA (production assistant) to your dressing room.  Your name is on the door on a slip of paper - because in television you are easily replaced by the next “guest.”  But, I will admit it never gets old.

You walk in to the dressing room - fresh flowers, bright lights for hair and makeup, and yes a Kraft Services bar with great cookies!

I guess on this day there weren’t any “celebrities” so I got the largest dressing room.  I was used to the small dressing rooms, so I “knew” I was coming up in the world!

It was great to work with Nate…

But, you know what, I was even more fortunate to meet his Design Director - Nathanael Nelson - who is an amazing stylist, designer, and now a producer here at Joyus. His career led him to the Oprah Show and then to the Nate Berkus Show.

Here he is showing Nate how to frame your photos in a variety of ways….

He would be the first person on stage with me to make sure everything looked perfect, so when you watch our Joyus videos now you will see his creative eye at work with mine.  We want to show you how beautiful life can be, in an affordable and doable way. Let us know what you would like to see on our Joyus Facebook page

Girl Scouts Turn 100! and now Space Cookies too..

by Sukhinder Singh Cassidy

So tonight I went to the 100 year anniversary celebration of the Girl Scouts at the Ferry Building is SF; that’s right 100 years!  It was amazing to learn that over 50 million girls in the US have been a part of the Girl Scouts during this time. I’m not sure there has been a more impactful program for developing young girls globally over the last century.

It made me think back to my own years as a Brownie and Girl Guide growing up in Canada . I was always the worst one of the pack; missing parts of my uniform, arriving late to troop meetings and the last to leave with parents running late to  pick me up. Yet on and on I went, learning how to camp, take care of nature, get along with other girls, and strive for every badge.

Early on, embarrassed to be the disorganized one, I decided to quit. I was only 7 or 8 and thought I was done. Three days, later, racked by guilt, I cried my eyes out and decided to return, as Brownies had taught me one more thing - to persevere:)  I graduated Brownies and made my way through Girl Guides with slightly more grace, but still as disheveled as ever.

Thinking back to this experience, it was no surprise to me to hear the stats that two-thirds of female senators and congresswomen and something like 80% of female business owners in the US were Girl Guides . When it comes to developing leadership traits in young girls, it works.

Most importantly, tonight I got a lesson in how far Girl Guides has evolved in driving new opportunities for girls to lead. I heard from one of the Space Cookies - i.e. an all -girl Robotics Team created through a collaboration between NASA and the Girl Guides - who’s on her way to MIT to study Biomechanical Engineering thanks to her involvement in Girl Guides. As I left the dinner, I couldn’t help but think - Girl Guides in Space - I love it:)
